It's good to see her smile. A lot of the time Hopper isn't sure about what he's doing, if he's being a good guardian or if he's just falling into the same traps he had before. He tries not to spend as much time away from home as he had with Sara, because if there's one thing he regrets more than all others, it's having put his job ahead of her like that.
There was just always more time. It's what he'd always believed. He knows better than that now and while he's still not perfect and still works too many late nights, he's trying. He's aware.
